San Diego CARock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego, a nonprofit organization that brings the community together to empower girls through music, will host its third annual camper showcase at the House of Blues San Diego on Saturday, July 28 at 12 p.m. Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego is a week-long summer empowerment camp for girls ages 8 to 17 that consists of workshops and activities guided by female mentors, and a final performance by the young campers. The camp aims to foster an environment that encourages self-confidence, uniqueness, creativity and teamwork.
“We’re so excited to announce attendance for Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls is full this year! Our empowerment camp provides an opportunity for young girls to learn new skills, build their self-esteem and find their voices through music,” said Melissa Grove, founder and president of Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego. “It is much more than just a music camp; the girls will learn valuable lessons and skills that will guide them throughout their lives.”
In one week, young campers form bands, collaborate to write an original song, learn an instrument (they can choose from vocals, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards or drums) and perform live in front of their family, friends and the community at the House of Blues San Diego. Beginning at 9 a.m. each day, camp kicks off in a rock star celebration, with a high-energy assembly that includes hilarious yet educational skits performed by camp mentors. The skits address any social issues that may arise during camp. Throughout the day, the girls are divided into age groups and break out into music lessons, workshops and band practice. During lunch break, inspiring female musicians perform; share their experience working in the music industry and answer questions from the campers. Workshops consist of necessary band-building talents like designing and screen-printing band t-shirts and songwriting, as well as other skills like self-defense, image and identity, media literacy, community impact and more.
New to the camp this year, Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego partnered with Techne Sound, a national education organization whose mission is to support the diversity of participants in technology oriented endeavors and in technical fields. Techne Sound will host a workshop teaching campers how to build their own contact microphones and use them to turn everyday objects into instruments. Campers will then be led through a group musical improvisation using their new instructions. The girls will be able to take the microphones home and continue to make music beyond camp.
“It’s incredible to see the campers’ transformations from when they first enter camp to their final performance day,” said Grove. “With the skills they’ve learned throughout the week, the girls are empowered and ready to rock their performances! On showcase day I tell the girls this is their three-minute tour, so go out and own it!”
The camp is Monday, July 23 through Friday, July 27 at A.R.T.S. (A Reason to Survive), 200 East 12th Street, National City, CA from 9-5 p.m. Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls San Diego provides financial aid and scholarships with the support of its donors.
Major donors include the Jason Mraz Foundation, Find Your Light Foundation, Clare Rose Foundation, The Arnett Family Charitable Fund, Callaway Golf Employee Matching Gift Program and Indo Custom Teak Flooring, LLC.
The final showcase will take place on Saturday, July 28 at the House of Blues San Diego at 1055 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 at 12 p.m. Tickets to the camper showcase are $10. The event is open to the public and all ages.
