The Explorers Program teaches important life and career skills to young people from all backgrounds through immersive career experiences and mentorship. It provides students with a hands-on experience to determine whether or not a particular career field is right for them, while having fun in an engaging and informal environment. Explorers Programs, which are called “Posts,” are available in hundreds of different career fields.
The Conservation & Sustainable Agriculture Post, which is hosted by the RCD, is San Diego’s first post in this environmental career focus. It is a 12-month program for youth aged 14 – 18 that includes two monthly classroom sessions and one monthly field visit. Beginning in October, 2018, the sessions will teach students about conservation practices that are utilized in sustainable farming, including: how to create irrigation systems and fencing, how to set up and maintain a garden plot, how to cook with seasonal produce, and most importantly, how these practices benefit the local and global environment.
