San Diego CA— The ResMed Foundation is continuing its support of the San Diego Center for Children Academy’s Intensive Math Improvement Program for the 7^th straight year with a grant award of $10,000. The Center has been facilitating the program since 2012 and has expanded its capacity from last year to reach 40 students. This is an increase from the 25 students served during the 2016-2017 school year.
The math program works with students through intensive one-on-one and small group instruction. This individualized instruction is performed in order to improve students’ comprehension and mastery of mathematics that helps them better visualize math, generalize math to everyday use and answer real world questions, improve number sense, and help prepare them to compete in the job market. Students achieve these goals and objectives by enhancing their skill set in operational uses of math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide), numeration manipulation, spatial reasoning, and problem solving.
“The grant from ResMed Foundation will ensure that we can continue to provide, improve and expand this already successful program,” said Moisés Barón, Ph.D. President & CEO of the San Diego Center for Children. “Our specialized math program is designed to raise students’ comprehension and mastery of mathematics so that they can graduate from high school and be prepared to go on to continued education or rewarding job opportunities.”
Barón explained that the program offers an instructor who is available to all Academy classrooms to assist with student learning using special visuals and activities, as well as offering personal and small-group help.
“This support from the ResMed Foundation allows us to continue improving and expanding our Intensive Math Improvement Program for students at all grade levels,” Barón added. “Currently, our Program is on target to provide more than 1,500 hours of instruction by the end of this academic year. However, we anticipate seeing an increase in the number of students served and hours provided given our ability to better assess and help students who are struggling in this subject area that is critical to academic success and beyond.”
The Center’s Academy, is a K-12 WASC accredited nonpublic school that is partially funded by and works in partnership with local school districts. From prevention and assessment, outpatient counseling, specialized education, foster care, residential treatment and help with transitioning back into the community, the Center is a flagship organization for children and teens struggling with mental, emotional and behavioral challenges.
The ResMed Foundation was established in 2002 to support research and knowledge about sleep and breathing. In addition to that purpose, the Foundation contributes a percentage of its annual budget to promote the arts in San Diego County, as well as primary and secondary-education, specifically in math, science and technology.
