Concept to Cure: The Process from Research to Market and Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” to take place Tuesday, March 5, 2019

San Diego CAOn March 5, Susan G. Komen San Diego (Komen San Diego) will bring together patients, scientists and physicians to learn about the process of getting drugs and treatments from research to market, local current metastatic breast cancer research, and tips on how to thrive with metastatic disease at its second annual Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The event is FREE and open to public, but capacity is limited. Attendees must RSVP by February 26. A complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided to all event participants.
“In San Diego County, six women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day and unfortunately we lose one woman a day to this disease,” said Shaina Gross, president and CEO, Komen San Diego.“The vast majority of those who die from breast cancer are diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC). To reach our bold goal of cutting the number of breast cancer deaths each year in half, Susan G. Komen San Diego knows we need to focus on MBC—through developing effective treatment, providing needed resources to support those living with metastatic disease, and unlocking the cures.”

Event highlights include:

  • An engaging panel discussion on the steps and phases of new treatment development moderated by Dr. Farideh Bischoff.
  • Fast-Pitch Contest – Local San Diego researchers will have 5 to 10 minutes to pitch their current work related to Metastatic Breast Cancer to a panel of judges for a chance to win a $1,000 cash award, sponsored by The Doris A. Howell Foundation for Women’s Health Research and $2,500 in credits on Scientist.com. Patients are welcome to attend this session and listen to the emerging work in our region.
  • Thriving with Metastatic Disease – This session will feature presentations from The Healing Foods Program of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, and Cancer and Careers. ABOUT SUSAN G. KOMEN SAN DIEGO®:
Since its inception in 1995, Susan G. Komen San Diego has invested more than $19.6 million to global breast cancer research and local breast health services. Susan G. Komen is the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government and much of that investment has been awarded to scientists in San Diego. Nearly 70 percent of our research investment is focused on metastatic disease. Locally, Komen San Diego provides free mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, MRIs, care coordination, education and financial assistance for breast cancer patients’ most critical needs during treatment. The organization also has a robust public policy and advocacy arm to ensure healthcare access and scientific progress. Komen has set a Bold Goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026. Seventy-five percent of every dollar raised in San Diego stays in San Diego County to fund breast health services for uninsured and underinsured women and their families. The remaining 25 percent funds international breast cancer research. For more information, please visit www.komensandiego.org. Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram.
