San Diego CA— A procession to the 18th annual vigil will depart from the San Diego Rescue Mission, 120 Elm Street, San Diego, at 9:00 am., March 23, 2019 and walk approximately a mile in the procession to the County Building. Each person will carry a pair of shoes which represents the 111 homeless individuals who died alone on the streets of San Diego last year.
The City of Hope International Choir will open the program at the County Building with a song at 10 a.m. The program will also include a welcome from President & CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission, Donnie Dee, followed by Prayer of Remembrance, ringing of the bell and testimonies.
The event is designed to remember those who died alone on the streets of San Diego last year, thereby extending them the dignity they deserve as being a human being created in the image of God.
Founded in 1955, San Diego Rescue Mission is a faith-based organization that offers safe-haven as well as restorative care and rehabilitation services to the homeless, addicted, abused and poor in our community. San Diego Rescue Mission offers a wide range of onsite programs and services through its Nueva Vida Haven Emergency Shelter, Partners for Hunger Relief, Men’s Center, Women and Children’s Center, a Children’s Center and Transitional Housing. San Diego Rescue Mission also owns and operates several thrift stores in the San Diego area. It is the only major homeless shelter in San Diego that does not receive government funding for its programs. The organization exists entirely on donations.
