Oceanside CA— For the past 26 years, El Camino High School has brought our local history into the classroom with our Veterans Day celebration. Veterans who have served in Korea, Viet Nam and the Middle East share their experiences with El Camino students.
This year’s event celebrates Midway – the event and the aircraft carrier. The featured speaker is John P. Landry who is a volunteer docent at the USS Midway Museum. Mr. Landry is a retired Naval Officer who was deployed as part of the Blockade of Cubs in 1962. He was also part of the Naval Task Force that sailed above the Arctic Circle to conduct Naval operations north of Russia.
The USS Midway also has a local connection to Oceanside. It brought Viet Nam refugees to Camp Pendleton under operation Frequent Wind in 1975. Tent City was created until the refugees could settled into our country.
Vets will be speaking in various classrooms from 9:41 until 11:42 on Friday, November 8, 2019.
This is the longest running Veterans Day event in San Diego County – 26 consecutive years. It was started by former El Camino High School history teacher Bob Nelson and Oceanside Rotary leader Jim Downs
