North County Facility Giving Local Youth 18-26 Job Training Opportunities and a Second Chance at a High School Diploma

Escondido CA— Perhaps you have seen some of the green-uniformed Urban Corps members working throughout the County of San Diego. Located in the Midway district of San Diego, the Corps unique work-learn program has given thousands of young adults the opportunity to receive paid work training and a second chance opportunity to earn their high school diploma through the Corps on-site charter school.
Their work projects run the gamut from tree planting, landscaping, trail building, and minor home construction and rehab, to environmental clean-up. Now, with the opening of its new facility in Escondido, the Urban Corps will be expanding its reach to opportunity-youth who live in North County.
“Up until now It has always been difficult to offer our services to the youth of North County simply because of our location.” Said Chief Executive Officer, Kyle Kennedy, “With this new facility, we can replicate the services we provide at our main office without the challenge for these young people of trying to get to our Midway location on a daily basis. Our Escondido site is in walking distance to the Nordahl Road Sprinter Station, very close to the intersection of the 5 and 78 freeways, and easily accessible for the youth of San Marcus, Escondido, Vista, Carlsbad and Oceanside.”
Founded in 1989, Urban Corps is a non-profit conservation corps and charter school providing job training and a second chance high school education program to young adults ages 18-26, assisting these youths in becoming more employable and giving them a second chance at earning their high school diploma.
Through their participation in the program, Corpsmembers will receive a paycheck and on-the-job work experience, while gaining relevant job skills training. In the process, the youth will work to earn a high school diploma while receiving career counseling, life skills training, and job placement services. After completing the program, Corpsmembers are more employable, have the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workforce, and know the importance of giving back and protecting community resources.
