San Diego CA— Mama’s Kitchen has announced the 29th Annual Mama’s Day, originally scheduled for Friday, May 8, will be postponed until further notice due to the evolving situation with COVID-19. The event, often touted as the original San Diego tasting event, featuring more than 50 prominent restaurants and culinary professionals, serves as the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year.
“The health and well-being of our supporters, volunteers, clients, and staff members are of the utmost importance to us,” says Alberto Cortés, Chief Executive Officer of Mama’s Kitchen. “We believe it is imperative to follow the CDC and government recommendations to reduce large group gatherings. Additionally, at this time, it is crucial for our staff to focus on key operations providing medically-tailored meals and healthy nutrition to critically ill and vulnerable populations throughout San Diego.”
Mama’s Kitchen remains open and operating at this time, and is seeking additional support through volunteers and donations to keep up with the growing demand for services in response to the COVID-19 crisis. “It is crucial that our clients get the home-delivered nutrition they need during this state of emergency as they are at a higher risk of illness and mortality given their compromised immune systems. Our services allow clients to receive the nutrition they need without leaving the safety of their home, making our work even more critical at this time,” says Cortés. Mama’s Day supports Mama’s Kitchen’s mission to deliver three medically-tailored nutritional meals a day, seven days a week, free of charge for local women, men and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer or other critical illnesses, including congestive heart failure and type 2 diabetes. About Mamas Kitchen
Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of its clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. The organization realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide individuals with HIV who are unable to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. In 2019, the organization delivered its 9 millionth meal.
For 30 years, Mama’s Kitchen has never turned away a client who qualified for its services. The organization’s commitment to its clients remains unchanged and over the years Mama’s Kitchen has expanded its mission to serve San Diegans affected by HIV, cancer, congestive heart failure and type 2 diabetes. Mama’s Kitchen currently provides home-delivered meals, pantry services and nutrition education services to over 1,600 women, men and children in San Diego County annually.
