Carlsbad CA— The Carlsbad Senior Center is introducing virtual classes and events for adults 50 and older beginning Wednesday July 1, 2020. Once registered online, an email is sent to customers with instructions on how to log in using either Zoom or Microsoft Teams. All programs and classes can be found on www.carlsbadconnect.org. Beyond classes the center is also offering a daily meal, Monday through Friday except for national holidays for residents.
For classes, everyone is invited! It is not necessary to be a resident in Carlsbad, San Diego or California! The benefit of virtual has no boundaries. Below is a menu of offerings which is growing each week with the most current classes on www.carlsbadconnect.org.
Basic Zentangle 101: Tuesday, July 14 10 to 11:30 a.m. Zentangle requires no experience, few supplies, and can be done almost anywhere, at any time. In the class you will learn the history and basics for creating repetitive, non-representational patterns which together create a beautiful art piece. Meanwhile the process helps quiet the mind and relax the body. If you register by July 6, supplies can be picked up at the Carlsbad Senior Center from July 7-10 and July 13 at noon. Otherwise you will need 2-3 3 ½ inch by 3 ½ inch squares on quality paper (watercolor is good, but good copy paper can work), a 01 micron pen or thin lined pen, a graphite pencil (2B), and a tortillon (shader) or Q-tip.
Beginning Heart Coherent Tai Chi Kung: Mondays, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Learn & practice inspiring breath and movement patterns designed to improve relaxed balance, lifted alignment, with personal harmony of body, mind and spirit. $42.30 residents/$47 nonresidents.
Functional Yoga: Wednesdays, 1 to 2 p.m. Create a union of body, mind and spirit as you practice basic postures and breath work while re-training yourself to function better off the mat. Postures focus on your requests and include balance, joint comfort, flexibility, strength, bone health and more! Instructor has decades of yoga experience, with seniors in particular. This class is not suitable for beginners. You will need a mat and small towel. Wear clothing that allows movement. Little to no food suggested within two hours of practice. $9 per class.
Intermediate Watercolor: Thursdays, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Have fun challenging your artistic abilities by applying exciting new watercolor techniques that make your paintings truly beautiful. Classes include step-by-step demonstrations, supportive feedback, a color reference photo and a line sketch. No drawing required, but prior watercolor experience is. Materials not included. $117.90 residents/$131 nonresidents.
PiYo (Pilates/Yoga): Thursdays, 2 to 3 p.m. Work your core, back and belly! Pilates was developed by a dancer to improve balance, flexibility, strength, circulation and posture. Please bring a mat and small towel, and wear clothing that allows movement. Little to no food suggested within two hours of practice. $9 per class.
Seed Starting Indoors: Tuesday, July 21, 1 to 2 p.m. This class will give instructions for start-to-finish seed projects including summer vegetables and flowers. It will also teach students how to choose containers, the proper soil mix and how to use a variety of seed. The final steps of how to transplant into the garden, will give you a successful introduction to rare and heirloom vegetables which are usually not found in a garden center. Packets of soil and seeds will be available. $25 per class.
“24K” Zumba Gold with Saleemah: Fridays, 10:30 to 11 a.m. Cha-cha, merengue, salsa and swing are just a few of the infectious rhythms that will get you moving your feet, clapping your hands, shaking your hips and having so much fun, you’ll forget you’re exercising! Easy-to-follow dance steps makes this class suitable for beginners and experienced alike. $5 per class.

Lunch at the Culinary Lab: Thursdays, 12 to 1 p.m. The Culinary Lab is for foodies who want to whip up fun, food, health and science to optimize an epicurean lifestyle. Become the master of your taste buds while learning the health benefits of creative and fresh grown food. Channel your culinary artist while sharpening your science acumen.
UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning: Thursdays, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego is a program for adults over the age of 50 who want to be part of a learning community with peers. Each quarter, Osher features lectures and seminars by the outstanding faculty and researchers of the UC San Diego community, as well as local leaders, artists and musicians. The Carlsbad Senior Center has access to the Osher video library and shows recorded video lectures weekly on a variety of different topics from art to science. July’s topics include:
