San Diego CA— On Wednesday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., San Diego Oasis, a nonprofit which promotes lifelong learning for older adults, will host “Understanding Police Reform,” an online presentation led by two panelists, former San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman and Marisa T. Darden, principal at Squire Patton Boggs LLP.
The workshop (Class #493) will delve into the complexity of police reform and what it really means when people say, “defund the police.” Zimmerman and Darden will attempt to answer intricate questions such as: Does restructuring law enforcement make sense? How can we reimagine public safety in a way that appeases the masses? Where would the potential funding go when you reallocate it from law enforcement? Workshop fee is $15.
The August 12 workshop featuring Zimmerman and Darden is part of San Diego Oasis’ series on addressing racism in our community. On August 25, the nonprofit will host “Unpacking Racism Through Dialogue – The Antiracism Project in Black and White” led by Peter Bolland, MA, Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Southwestern College.
About the Panelists
Shelley Zimmerman was the first woman to ever serve as San Diego Police Department’s Chief of Police, and her 35 years of service with the SDPD set a service record for sworn female officers. During her tenure as Chief of Police, San Diego‘s overall crime fell to its lowest level in 49 years. Since retiring in 2018, Zimmerman joined National University faculty lecturing on public safety and leadership. She is a sought-after speaker on the myriad of challenges and opportunities policing brings in the 21st Century. Shelley is a graduate of the Ohio State University and the FBI National Academy.
A former Assistant United States Attorney and an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office, Marisa Darden is currently a principal at Squire Patton Boggs LLP, a full-service global law firm located in Cleveland, OH. Polster as his Honor’s delegate to the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, the London School of Economics, and Duke University School of Law.
