San Diego CA— Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization that provides supportive services to families with hospitalized newborns in local neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), launched a new transportation program in June 2020. Miracle Babies Special Delivery shuttle van provides home-to-hospital-to-home services to parents who cannot drive upon discharge because of c-section deliveries or have limited resources to access their hospitalized newborn.
Currently, Miracle Babies is only able to provide service to Rady’s Children’s Hospital and Scripps La Jolla to meet the requested demand. Miracle Babies is currently fundraising for additional shuttles to serve more parents and hospitals across the county.
Providing transportation during those critical first days of a baby’s life can dramatically impact the well-being of both the new mother and the baby, since it enables increased opportunities for the mother and NICU baby to be together for breastfeeding and kangaroo care.
“By bringing together mothers and their hospitalized newborns during the early developmental window, Miracle Babies allows infants to breastfeed and enjoy skin-to-skin contact. This has the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of babies in the NICU, their families, society, and possibly future generations,” said Dr. Daneshmand.
Funding for the transportation program will be provided by grants, private individuals, corporate partners and event fundraising.
