San Diego CA— The Crossroads Foundation in San Diego has received a $135,000 gift to fund the renovation and reconstruction of their main house in the Hillcrest area.
The grant is from the McMillen Family Foundation, which funds Southern California charities that serve people affected by drug and alcohol dependency.
Crossroads is a non-medical, social model Recovery Home which provides a safe and sober living environment for women 18 years and older who need a residential program to conquer their addictions and the problems associated with their addiction. Crossroads provides structured programs with recovery services available 24-hours a day, seven days a week, with an average length of stay of three months or longer. The Crossroads facilities are in a quiet residential area near downtown San Diego and provides a home-like atmospheres in a shared community to aid residents in regaining and maintaining sobriety.
Founded in 1957 by a group of prominent judges, attorneys and civic leaders, Crossroads is the first women’s residential recovery program in San Diego County and the second oldest in California.
“Since the founding of Crossroads many changes have been experienced and required from the various state and county entities which affects our funding sources,” said Vickie Brady, Executive Director of Crossroads. “ Due to the financial woes of the times, County funding now provides less than a third of the funding required to operate and maintain the Crossroads program, which means we must rely heavily on client fees, fundraisers, donations and grants.”
The McMillen Family Foundation, based in Los Angles, CA was created in 2008 by Karl McMillen and his wife, Carol. Karl spent much of his life working to build his two successful businesses. However, he lost his first wife to cancer and both his sons to substance abuse. These life events fueled his passion to not only give back but to make a difference in the lives of those who struggle with substance abuse. The mission of the McMillen Family Foundation is to provide assistance to eligible groups in Southern California which are dedicated to helping people of all ages who have been impacted, directly or indirectly, by alcohol and/or drugs and to provide community outreach and education to prevent alcohol and/or drug addiction before it starts.
“This project has improved our residential recovery home and services to an extremely underserved population.” Brady said. “The generous investment from the McMillen Family Foundation has completed the funding we needed to fully implement this project, and we are excited and thankful about partnering with the McMillen Family Foundation.”
