A course for community members which takes an in-depth look at fire entrapment and escape
San Diego CA— The Fire Safe Council of San Diego County’s mission is to provide an exchange of information through education and training, and to foster fire prevention and safety throughout the San Diego region. They provide educational workshops and events to community members throughout the county, support a network of 43 local fire safe councils, manage fuels reduction programs, and more. For years, the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County has hosted “Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface” workshops which teach the principles used by firefighters in suppressing wildland fires and protecting structures in at-risk communities. The Last Chance Survival Simulation Workshop was developed by a broad range of interagency partners, including, Rex Hambly, Fire Captain with the Bureau of Land Management, who states, “Our new Last Chance Survival Simulation Workshop directly addresses the need for civilian survival and escape techniques during a wildfire”. This course expands upon “Ready Set Go”, a widely accepted statewide standard for wildfire preparation, and builds on topics covered in the “Fire Operations in the WUI” workshop.
Hambly states, “Each year, it becomes more apparent that there is a need to enhance wildfire safety and evasion training for at-risk communities. That’s why the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County is piloting the very first of its kind Last Chance Survival Simulation Workshop.” Free to local residents, the one-day, in-depth course covers recognition primed decision-making, open-source fire intelligence, contingency planning, and other practices that may enhance the likelihood of surviving a fire entrapment scenario. The course will be delivered by recognized experts in the field.
The Fire Safe Council of San Diego County was formed in 1997 as a nonprofit corporation (501c3) through a collaboration between the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County (RCD), along with local, state, federal, and tribal fire agency partners. The RCD manages the programs and the funds for the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County.
