Southern California is making big strides in its efforts to fight plastic pollution — we saw the third city this summer pass a resolution and make the ask for a Skip The Stuff ordinance to reduce the amount of single-use plastic flooding our communities. Oceana and Surfrider applaud the City of Oceanside along with the community members who worked with elected leaders to make this victory possible.
Under the Skip The Stuff ordinance restaurants and bars are prohibited from using single-use plastics, including plastic utensils, straws, stirrers, and condiment packets unless asked for upon request.
Support for policies to prohibit and reduce single-use plastic is gaining momentum and could not be more necessary. We need to stop this crisis at the source. Local, state, and national policies are critical in prompting companies to curb their plastic production. We urge more cities in Southern California to follow Oceanside’s lead and break free from plastic pollution.
Sincerely,
Melissa Morris
