Oceanside CA— More than 2,000 children and their families attended MiraCosta College’s Community Science Fair this year, which was held on April 18 at the Oceanside Campus. This year there were 90 booths, five labs with interactive microscope activities, and one classroom with math and memory activities–about 125 total activities. This year’s focus was on Title I schools and schools with children who are under-represented in the sciences and college.
“I was so pleased to see so much diversity at our event,” said Bea Palmer, event coordinator. “I found myself using my Spanish and observed our ambassadors translating, and that was very rewarding in itself.”
A lot of teamwork went into making the fair interesting and inspiring.
“The Service Learning team worked really hard, and the support from various departments made our job easier,” said Palmer. “Seeing all of our student presenters, the faculty, and the community partners share science in an interactive and fun way was worth all the work.”
Added Palmer, “Every time we bring a child and family together as a unit, they are one step closer to truly believing they are college bound.”
