Oceanside CA— Volunteers from the Home Depots’ Community Impact program were at Palmquist Elementary School, last week, to help teach third graders building and construction skills.
“I went to the Home Depot and asked if they would like to donate some ceramic tiles so we could do mosaics in our art program,” explained Susan Hughes, an art teacher at Palmquist. “They said we can do that and we can go a step better. That is how all this came about.”
“All the Home Depots offer the program. said Lisa Thomas, the Operational Assistant Manager at The Home Depot on Vista Way and College. “It’s just a way to give back to the community. Any other schools that are interested in doing something like this just need to let us know in advance so we can order the kits. Once we know what we need, the sign-up sheets go out for employees to volunteer.”
Lisa explained that you can go to any Home Depot to request the program. “We do parties and other types of events too,” said Lisa.
“It’s the first time a lot of these kids have ever held a hammer. It really is fun,” said Susan.
