Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College is offering Spring, 2017 credit courses in Anthropology at the Oceanside Campus. Spring classes begin January 23. Enroll online at www.miracosta.edu.
ANTH 104 Native American Cultures (3 units)
#2716, Tues/Thurs, 10:30–11:45 a.m. Oceanside Campus, Room 3601
This class explores the traditional lifeways of the major North American culture groups, including the traditional foragers of the Great Basin, the sedentary hunters and fishermen of the Pacific Northwest Coast, the nomadic horse peoples of the Great Plains, the Pueblo Peoples of the Southwest, the sophisticated farmers of the Northeastern Woodlands, and the descendants of the Mound Builders of the Southeast. We address topics like relationship with the environment, family structure, gender roles, political structure, and traditional arts and ceremonies. This is a great course for anyone who wants to explore cultural diversity.
ANTH 190 Primate Behavior and Ecology (3 units)
#2715, Tues/Thurs, 9–10:15 a.m. Oceanside Campus, Room 3601
This class is a three-in-one. Students get to learn all about the living primates, including current conservation issues. They also get a complete course – the only course on campus – about the evolution of animal behavior, so all students interested in animal sciences would benefit. Finally, each student conducts a semester-long research project at the San Diego Zoo, complete with quantitative data collection and analysis, and scientific presentations in standard paper and poster formats. Any student thinking about research in the future should take this course as it offers experiences that are rare at the community college level.
