MiraCosta College President Appointed to National Science Board

Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Dr. Sunita Cooke was recently appointed to the National Academy of Science Board of Science Education. The three-year term begins in January 2017.
“Having a representative from MiraCosta on this board puts us in a prime position to increase access and participation in STEM community college programs,” Dr. Cooke said.
The National Academy of Science Board of Science Education (NAS BOSE) focuses on science learning and education for all, from early childhood to adulthood, in both schools and informal learning environments, such as science museums, aquariums, nature centers, and social networks. In the past, NAS BOSE has produced reports discussing how to support STEM fields outside of the classroom, as well as implementing updated science standards in schools.
Individuals on the commission serve a three-year term with the possibility of renewing for a second three-year term. Meetings are held twice a year once in the spring in Washington DC and once in winter in Irvine, California.
“Science teaching and learning in the community college setting, as well as access and participation in STEM community college programs more generally, are important topics for BOSE, so Dr. Cooke’s expertise could be extremely valuable,” said Adam Gamoran, president of the William T. Grant Foundation and chair of the National Academy of Science Board of Science Education.
