Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College Community Education is offering the following arts and music, not-for-credit, courses this spring:
Knitting Basics and Beyond: Learn the timeless art of knitting and unlock your creativity in this no stress class. Taught by a certified knitting instructor; each session will be divided into two parts. First, we will explore topics through lecture and hands-on practice. Then, knitters will have time to work on their own projects, consult with the instructor on specific issues and share in the relaxing experience of knitting as a part of a community. Fee: $129; Supplies: $3; Location: Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, Room 4016; 6 Mondays (every-other Monday) 1/29-4/9, 6-8:30 PM.
Beginning Ukulele: Do you have a ukulele sitting in your house waiting to be played? Wouldn’t you like to pick up a ukulele, jam on the beach with friends and show off what you have learned from this class? This class is open to beginners and all those who would like to continue to play the ukulele, but are not quite on the intermediate level yet. Fee: $79; Supplies: A $10 material fee will be collected in class. Please bring your own ukulele, tuner, 3-ring binder, notebook and pencil to class; Location: San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave., Cardiff, Room 201; 9 Mondays, 1/29–3/26, 6:30–8 PM, No class on 2/19.
MiraCosta College Chorale: Experienced choral singers are invited to join with credit students to sing college-level repertoire and receive instruction in vocal production, sight reading, ensemble singing, diction and musicianship. Audition Required: Tuesday, 1/22, 6:30 PM. Please contact Dr. Langager at [email protected] prior to the audition. Fee: $69; Location: Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside, Room 2406; Tuesdays, 1/30–5/15, 6:30–8:40 PM.
MiraCosta College Symphony Orchestra: This is for musicians who are interested in performing with the MiraCosta Symphony Orchestra. This class includes study and performance of orchestral literature from the 17th century to the present. Open to college students and community musicians wishing to develop a further understanding of music through symphonic ensemble playing. Members are expected to participate in rehearsals and concert presentations. Audition Required: Wednesday, 1/24, 6:30 PM. Contemporary Big Band: This course is for musicians interested in performing with MOJO (MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra). This multiple Downbeat Award-winning ensemble concentrates on the preparation and performance of large jazz ensemble/big band jazz. Students study music from a wide variety of historical eras, ranging from the 1920s-swing style to contemporary styles. Students are required to participate in both on and off campus performances. Audition Required: Tuesday, 1/22, 6 PM. Please contact Steve Torok at [email protected] prior to the audition. Coastal Communities Concert Band: Under the direction of Tom Cole, the 75-piece Coastal Communities Concert Band rehearses every Monday night at Oak Crest Middle School from 7–9:30 PM. Membership is based on experience and needed instrumentation. Call the personnel manager at 760.533.2333 to learn about joining. If your section is full, you may be put on a waiting list until a vacancy occurs. Our next concerts are 2/25 at 2 PM, Carlsbad Community Church, and 4/29 at 2 PM, San Dieguito Academy.
