High Schoolers Will Learn About Peacemaking in a Nuclear World, Pandemic Diplomacy, Border and Immigration Issues, More

San Diego CA— The San Diego Diplomacy Council, in partnership with La Jolla Country Day School, will launch the first-ever “Global Leaders Virtual Summer Program,” on July 6-27 for students ages 14-18. The program will give globally minded teens from all over the world an opportunity to connect with international leaders and cultures, while contemplating questions that plague the world’s most critical thinkers.
In four week-long sessions on different topics, students will immerse themselves in timely, global issues and interact with international experts, diplomats and practitioners to discover unique cultural differences and experiences. They will engage in a diplomacy simulation modeled on real-world circumstances, strengthen their aptitude for diplomatic debate, and experience cooking classes and musical performances from other cultures.
Students from around the world may choose to participate in one or more weeks. Topics include:

  • Week 1 (July 6-10) – These Are the Stakes: Peacemaking in a Nuclear World
  • Week 2 (July 13-17) – Bridge Over Troubled Water: Resource Sustainability
  • Week 3 (July 20-24) – Going Viral: Pandemic Diplomacy
  • Week 4 (July 27-31) – Tempest-Tossed: Borders and Immigration

“Our world is increasingly connected – and unconnected – especially in the face of all the social and political issues highlighted by current events,” said Fabienne Perlov, executive director of the San Diego Diplomacy Council. “Just because we can’t travel, doesn’t mean we can’t see the world. This program series will give students who want to discover what careers in diplomacy and foreign affairs are like the opportunity to do so, from the safety of their homes.”
At the conclusion of each week’s program, students will receive a Certificate of Excellence in Global Leadership, a prestigious addition to resumes and college applications. Sessions run Monday through Friday, 9-11:30 a.m. PDT. For registration and pricing, visit sandiegodiplomacy.org/event/summerprogram.
San Diegans can sponsor a student seeking to pursue an international career to participate in the program by contacting Jim Davis at [email protected].
