Carlsbad Surfer Dies Near Oceanside Harbor Entrance-UPDATED

Oceanside CA- A 51-year-old Carlsbad man died while surfing south of the Oceanside Harbor entrance at approximately 7:00 pm on the 24th. According to a police dispatch spokesperson, the man was found unresponsive in the water, police and fire personnel responded but were unable to resuscitate the surfer. The mans name is being withheld by the San Diego County Coroner.
UPDATE: The surfer has been identified by the San Diego County Coroner’s office as Micheal DeAngelis, 51. DeAngelis resided with his girlfriend in Carlsbad. On the evening of 09/24/13, he had been at a beach in Oceanside surfing when his girlfriend lost sight of him. Minutes later, he was found floating unresponsive in the water and 9-1-1 was called. When first responders arrived, he was found pulse-less. Advanced cardiac life support was applied and he was transported to Tri-City Medical. Despite aggressive resuscitation efforts, his death was pronounced. Cause of death was drowning due to: Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease complicated by hypertension.
