Oceanside CA- Firefighters were called to 5144 Mission Meadows Drive for a structure fire shortly before 1:00PM this afternoon. They arrived to find a fully involved structure in the backyard of the home.
Robbie Burlison and Kevin Allenstein were on their way back to school at Guajome Park Academy after a lunch break and saw flames leaping up from behind the home. “We were just on our way to school and saw this giant pillar of black smoke coming from behind this house.” said Burlison ” We pulled up and helped another guy get some dogs out of the backyard then called 9-1-1.” Allenstein said “We got here and a guy was using a garden hose trying to put out the fire. We don’t know who the guy was but we just helped getting the dogs out and gave them to neighbors.”
The owner of the home, Jan Mudd was at the grocery store when she received a call from her husband, Dr. Brian Mudd, telling her that fire dispatch just called him about the fire. ” I hurried home as fast as I could. I was just in shock when he told me.” said Jan. ” I’m so grateful to my neighbors and thankful for Robbie and Kevin for doing what they did.” Mudd said her husband is an oral surgeon and was in the middle of surgery when he got the call. The dogs were all safe but not all of them are hers. “I would have felt so bad if anything happened to them, we are babysitting some of them” Mudd said.
The shed was mostly a play room for the kids and had power, cable tv and beds. Firefighters contained the blaze to the backyard structure, which was a total loss, a fence and damage to vegetation. Five engines and med unit from Oceanside Fire Department responded to the blaze which took about 15 minutes to extinguish. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
