San Diego County CA– Memorial Day is upon us and that means many will spend the long holiday weekend partying and having a good time. Unfortunately, some will endanger lives by drinking and getting behind the wheel.
To protect the public from drunk drivers, the Sheriff’s Department will be adding extra DUI patrols across San Diego County beginning on Friday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and ending on Tuesday, May 27th at 3:00 a.m.
There will also be DUI checkpoints throughout Memorial Day Weekend in the following cities:
• Friday, May 23rd – San Marcos, Encinitas
• Sunday, May 25th – Poway
During the Memorial Day DUI enforcement period in 2013, the Sheriff’s Department arrested 39 people for drunk driving across San Diego County. “Be responsible when you’re on the road this Memorial Day,” said Sheriff Bill Gore. “If you drink, make sure you have a designated driver. Remember … DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER!” Driving Under The Influence, It’s Just Not Worth It.
Also this month, the Sheriff’s Department is cracking down on people who don’t wear seat belts. The Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 19th to June 1st. Anyone caught not wearing their seat belt may be cited. More importantly, wearing a seat belt could mean the difference between life and death.
San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies issued 1,012 citations for seat belt violations in 2013.
Remember to always wear your seat belt … CLICK IT OR TICKET!!!
Funding for the Memorial Day DUI patrols and checkpoints is provided by a grant from the California
Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
