OPD Releases DUI Checkpoint Results

Oceanside CA– The Oceanside Police Department conducted a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, May 2, 2014 between the hours of 9:45 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., at Mission Ave and Butler St. in the City of Oceanside as part of the DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program.
A total of 254 drivers were screened by officers, resulting in one arrest for DUI. Fifteen vehicles were towed and twenty-seven citations were issued.
The focus of the checkpoint was to reduce driving while intoxicated and injury collisions, while removing drunk drivers from the roadway. The Oceanside Police Department takes a proactive approach in educating our citizens and enforcement of the laws dealing with drinking and driving. We want to send a message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol. Each year drunk driving is a major cause of fatal and injury collisions.
The Oceanside Police Department encourages all drivers to designate a sober driver if they choose to drink. Officers working the checkpoint were pleased as they noticed a significant number of people were utilizing taxis or designated drivers.
The DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These practices are designed to attract attention to the seriousness of driving under the influence and serve as a deterrent to drivers.
The public is encouraged to help keep the roadways safe by calling 911 if they see an impaired driver.
