First Life Saved in SDSO Naloxone Pilot Progam

San Diego County CA– This morning, shortly before 8:10 a.m., a 37-year-old man, who is a known heroin user, was found by his mother unconscious with no pulse. The man was inside his residence, in the 400 block of Bradley Avenue, El Cajon.
The mother called 911 as the man’s step-father began CPR. Sheriff’s Traffic Sergeant Scott Hill, who is assigned to the Santee Station, was the first on scene. Sergeant Hill administered Naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of heroin, the victim began breathing, and was transported to a local hospital by paramedics.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department began carrying Naloxone approximately two weeks ago under a pilot program [Link] in conjunction with San Diego County Health and Human Services, Scripps Hospital, and UCSD Hospital. All deputies within the Santee Command were trained to use this important medication.
This is the first known use of Naloxone by a Deputy Sheriff in the County of San Diego. Furthermore, Sergeant Hill was one of the primary instructors in the use of Naloxone at the Santee Sheriff’s Station. Sergeant Hill’s quick response and actions directly saved this individual’s life.
