On Wednesday evening, the victim, a 22-year-old Vista man was walking in the water near Robert C. Frazee Beach in Carlsbad, with his 18-year-old brother when the older brother was reportedly hit by a large wave and swept into the sea. Officials stated that neither of the brothers were swimmers.
A search began and lasted several hours before it was called off late Wednesday. The search was set to resume at first light this morning. Several local agencies along with state lifeguards and the Coast Guard were involved in the search using helicopters, boats and divers. The Coast Guard kept a ship in the area until early this morning and had a helicopter up at daybreak.
The identity of the victim has not been released and the investigation is being turned over to the San Diego County Coroner.
