UPDATE: The identity of the motorcyclist killed in Del Mar, Sunday was released by the San Diego County Coroner today. The rider was 22 year old Alexander Mackenzie Williams of Escondido.
Del Mar CA= The Sheriff’s Communications Center received multiple calls to 9-1-1 of a vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist and an automobile in the 500 block of Via De La Valle in Del Mar. Sheriff’s Deputies and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the location, however the rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary indications, based on witness statements, are that the 22-year-old male rider was westbound on Via De La Valle at a high rate of speed in the #1 lane. It is possible that there was another motorcycle either riding in tandem with or racing him. The victim may have struck a cone that was in place for traffic control for the Del Mar Racetrack, causing him to be ejected from his motorcycle. He landed under the front end of a stopped Hyundai sedan in the #1 eastbound lane of Via De La Valle. The motorcycle continued westbound, rider-less, and struck a Toyota sedan in the #2 eastbound lane of Via De La Valle then struck two more vehicles in the #2 lane before coming to rest
None of the occupants of any of the vehicles struck by the motorcycle were injured. Preliminary indications are that alcohol was not a factor in this collision. The identity of the motorcycle rider is known, but is not being released pending notification of his next of kin.The collision investigation is being handled by the Traffic Division of the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team.
