Oceanside CA– The driver a of 2000 Honda Prelude and two passengers were killed with five others injured in a single car rollover on Hwy 78. The incident occurred approximately 11:00PM, Thursday night as the car was traveling eastbound on 78 when it suddenly veered right, rolled down the embankment and hit a power pole. The car was cut in half by the impact. Firefighters from Oceanside and Carlsbad worked to free the victims trapped in the car.
Two males, including the driver along with a female passenger died at the scene. The people in the vehicle range in age from 18-22. One passenger was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center the rest were taken to local hospitals by ambulance. The accident is being investigated by the CHP and it is unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal crash.
The Fifth Generation 2000 Honda Prelude was designed to carry no more than 5 people.
The impact knocked out power to the area and SDG&E crews continue to work on replacing and repairing the poles and power lines.
