Oceanside Harbor Clean Up for Slip Renters
Oceanside CA– The Oceanside Green Team has partnered with the Harbor to provide Oceanside slip renters with the opportunity to clean up the harbor. Slip renters are invited to participate in the first ever Dock Clean Up Day on October 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Oceanside Harbor. Slip renters are encouraged to clean out their dock boxes and boats and donate or properly dispose of items they no longer need. Goodwill will be collecting donated items, electronic waste, and providing paper shredding. AQCS Environmental will be collecting household hazardous waste materials. There will also be vendors who will be providing slip renters with environmental information, boater safety information, kids crafts, hands only CPR tips, paddle board instructions, and much more. The Dock Clean Up Day is in line with the City of Oceanside’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan of reaching zero waste by 2020.
Harbors and Marine ports are major hubs for economic development, tourism and subsequently ocean pollution and the Oceanside Harbor is no exception. The Oceanside Harbor has 300 slip renters, 12 restaurants and is adjacent to Oceanside Harbor Beach, the largest beach in Oceanside. The most common debris found in the ocean is plastics. Once discarded, plastics are weathered and eroded into very small fragments. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that plastic debris causes the death of more than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals. Dock Clean Up Day will give slip renters the opportunity to clean up the docks and help reduce debris and pollution in the harbor. Oceanside slip renters are an essential part of keeping our ocean and harbor beautiful for residents and visitors alike. All of Oceanside’s residents can make simple behavior changes that will benefit the health of our community and the water quality in our rivers, creeks, lagoons and ocean.
The Dock Clean Up Day is sponsored by the City of Oceanside and the Green Oceanside campaign. Green Oceanside is dedicated to teaching residents and local businesses how to be better stewards of the Earth by recycling, reducing waste, composting, using water efficiently and preventing water pollution and litter.
