Oceanside CA– A water main break, near the corner of El Camino Real and Mesa Drive, caused a 15 foot deep sink hole in the roadway of north-bound El Camino Real Wednesday night.
Robert A. Gutierrez, a Distribution Supervisor with the City of Oceanside Water Department said they received a call about water in the roadway around 7:00PM, Wednesday. When the water department investigated and shut the water off, the roadway opened up.
The water main, installed in 1988, is a 30 inch pipe buried 15 feet below the road surface. The sink hole is at least 15 feet deep by 12 feet wide, consuming a portion of the right turn lane from north-bound El Camino to east-bound Mesa Dr.
A Sig Alert has been issued for the area. North-bound El Camino Real will be closed for several days, according to Gutierrez, between Oceanside Boulevard and Mesa Drive. South-bound traffic hasn’t been affected at this time. Travel east and west on Mesa Drive is unaffected.
The cause of the pipe failure is unknown and Gutierrez said water service to customers in the area has not been affected.
