Oceanside CA– Join the Oceanside Public Library on October 3 for the First Friday Art Walk from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. This month the Library will highlight artists who have served in the military with live music, performance art, a community mural project and art on display. Inside the Civic Center building there will be masks and murals on display that were created by veterans participating the Combat Arts San Diego organization.
In the City Plaza, Westside Inflection will be entertaining us with the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin. The Quartet is made up of veterans from the Navy band; Jason Hanna on vocals and trumpet, Anders Larsson on drums, Jason Littlefield on bass and Jon Walters on guitar.
Also on the Civic Center Plaza Elizabeth Washburn, founder of Combat Arts will be assisting in creating a community mural on canvas. Her community mural method makes it so that everyone can contribute to a really amazing large-scale project. This activity will be family friendly and interactive.
Combat Arts (www.combatartssd.org) is a local nonprofit organization that believes in the transformative power of the arts; practice in helping people, specifically military veterans, to process trauma in a positive way. By making, viewing and exhibiting art, veteran participants experience increases in self-confidence, community interaction, and self-expression, in addition to reductions in physical pain, stress, anxiety, and depression. Creating visual art makes it possible for veterans to communicate with pictures what is difficult to put into words.
Founder Elizabeth Washburn has been actively working with combat veterans transitioning back to life outside of the war zone since 2007. In addition to her Masters in Fine Art, she has over ten years of teaching experience teaching diverse populations of students ranging from inner city youth to seniors. She has been a professional artist for 18 years and her artwork is exhibited nationally.
