Oceanside CA— Late Wednesday night, November 5, 2014 at 11:01 p.m. Oceanside Police officers were told of a reckless driver in the 600 block of South Coast Highway. The vehicle was being driven on a wheel rim. An officer saw the vehicle and made a traffic stop. Upon contact the driver fled from the vehicle.
After a short foot pursuit, he tried to climb a chain link fence. He was grabbed by the initial officer and two others. After a protracted scuffle in which the suspect received minor injuries, all three officers were slightly injured.
The suspect identified himself as Dwayne Johnson, he was later correctly identified as Corey Abernathy DOB 11/16/74; an Oceanside resident. Abernathy had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him. He was arrested for driving under the influence and assaulting police officers.
Oceanside Fire Department paramedics arrived and while paramedics were tending to Abernathy, he suddenly jumped to his feet and began to run. He was stopped by one of the officers and then taken to Tri-City Medical Center for evaluation.
Abernathy was then transported to Vista Detention Facility. The officers saw he had slipped his cuffs and took him out of the car. As they were re-positioning the handcuffs, Abernathy again began to fight with the officers. The officers were able to re-handcuff him with the assistance of Sheriff’s Department deputies.
Abernathy was booked for driving under the influence and assaulting police officers.
