Oceanside CA— On Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 8:21 p.m. Oceanside Police Department communications received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon (knife) in front of the Starbucks at 845 College Blvd.
The caller was Sandy Rivas, mother of the victim. The victim was a Hispanic male juvenile. The victim and witnesses told officers the victim came to Starbucks with his mother. While his mother was ordering beverages, he stepped out of the establishment and was confronted by two suspects. The suspects were a Hispanic male juvenile and a Hispanic female juvenile. Both were armed with knives.
When Rivas looked outside, she saw the male suspect lunging at her son and swiping at him with the knife. Fearing for her son, Rivas stepped outside and intervened. The male suspect spit on her. She used her cellular phone to call OPD. Both suspects fled to the rear of the Starbucks into a marshy area.
The initial officers located and detained the female suspect hiding in some bushes. They established a perimeter and requested assistance from ASTREA, the Aerial Support to Regional Enforcement Agencies helicopter from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. When ASTREA arrived, the male suspect tried to run but was caught and detained by officers. Both suspects were positively identified and arrested.
