Two Oceanside Teens in Custody

Carlsbad CA— Early this morning, February 21, at 4:07 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at Tamarack Avenue and Jefferson Street. One suspect reportedly pulled a bandana over his face and approached the victim in his vehicle and threatened him with a knife. The second suspect approached the passenger side of the victim vehicle and swung a bat striking his vehicle.
The victim deployed a Taser which struck one of the suspects in the chest. The victim fled in his vehicle westbound on Tamarack Avenue to Carlsbad Boulevard and the suspect vehicle gave chase. The victim attempted to flee from the suspects northbound on Carlsbad Blvd. into Oceanside.
The victim then fled southbound on the I-5 freeway back towards Carlsbad with speeds reaching 70 -100 m.p.h. The suspects tried to force the victim off the road several times.
Officers located the vehicles southbound on the I-5 freeway and conducted a felony vehicle stop on the suspect vehicle south of Tamarack Ave.
The suspect vehicle had three occupants who were taken into custody by officers without force. The baseball bat was recovered at the original scene, a crowbar and sheath for a knife were recovered inside the suspect vehicle, however, the knife is still outstanding.
This investigation is ongoing. The Carlsbad Police Department does not believe that there are any outstanding suspects related to this incident. There were no injuries to the victim or officers. One suspect sustained a minor Taser injury when the victim deployed the Taser.
The suspects have been identified as 18-year-old Jim Gonzalez and 18-year-old Hector Zamora from Oceanside. Gonzalez and Zamora will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Child Endangerment, Conspiracy, and Gang Enhancements. Additionally Zamora will also be booked for Reckless Driving.
It was determined that the third person in the suspect vehicle, a juvenile, did not a commit a crime and was released to the supervision of family.
