Leucadia CA—Early this morning, February 16, 2015, a fatal collision occurred on I-5 at approximately 3:10 a.m. An 18-year-old male from Oceanside was driving his 1992 Nissan Truck northbound I-5 north of Leucadia Blvd. at an unknown speed. For reasons still under investigation, he applied his brakes and lost control of his vehicle. He veered to the right, collided into a dirt embankment, overturned several times and eventually knocked over a light pole.
Due to the collision with the light pole, it was knocked down and fell onto the windshield of a 2009 Sterling UPS Big Rig. The driver, a 49-year-old male from West Covina was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The eighteen-year-old male in the Nissan had to be extracted from his truck by the Fire Department personnel using the jaws of life. He was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The identity of the Oceanside teen is being withheld at this time. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision. It remains under investigation.
