Carlsbad CA— Late last night, February 1st, at 11:57 p.m., the Carlsbad Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Toyota Sequoia at Carlsbad Village Drive and Interstate 5. The Sequoia entered northbound Interstate 5 from Carlsbad Village Drive and accelerated at a high rate of speed. The Toyota failed to yield to the police vehicle with its lights and siren activated.
The Sequoia continued northbound on Interstate 5 and exited Las Flores Drive. The Sequoia attempted to turn eastbound onto Las Flores Drive, but due to how fast it was traveling, the vehicle was unable to make the turn. The Sequoia continued forward where it collided with the curb and a tree at 1288 Las Flores Drive. Two Hispanic male adults fled the vehicle northbound into a field.
With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Sheriff’s air support (ASTREA), and the Oceanside Police Department, units searched the area with a police dog attempting to locate the two subjects who fled. Officers were unsuccessful in locating the two subjects.
A check of the registration of the Sequoia revealed that the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle from Carlsbad.
The investigation at the scene has been concluded. Further investigation into the stolen vehicle is pending.
