Oceanside CA— On Saturday, March 7, 2015 Oceanside Police Dispatch received numerous calls regarding a traffic collision near South Coast Highway and Missouri Avenue. Callers said a motorcyclist was down in the roadway and the driver of a white Mercedes had fled the scene in the vehicle.
Officers arrived on scene and found two motorcyclists. Both had been driving motorcycles. Both were down in the roadway and had injuries. Officers followed a debris and fluid trail to a parking structure at 401 North Coast Highway and located the vehicle. They were contacted a short while later by Colby Steven Goldschmied. Goldschmied claimed to be the driver of the Mercedes at the time of the collision.
Goldschmied told investigators he was making a left turn onto Coast Highway from a business when he felt something hit his car. He thought it might have been a motorcycle. He panicked and drove off without checking to see what had happened. He drove to the parking structure where he lives at 401 N. Coast Highway.
The investigation revealed Colby made a left turn from a parking lot. He collided with both of the motorcycles, which were southbound on Coast Highway.
Both drivers of the motorcycles were transported to area hospitals. Steve Witte was taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. Derek West was taken to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.
Parties involved:

• Colby Steven Goldschmied (corrected)— 24 years of age, arrested for felony DUI and felony hit and run. He is an Oceanside resident.
• Steven Witte— 24 years of age of Fallbrook, Ca. Taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. He suffered a head laceration and pain in his pelvic area.
• Derek West— 25 years of age of Camp Pendleton. Taken to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Ca.
