Oceanside CA— Assembly-member Rocky Chavez, a former Oceanside City Council member and a retired Marine Corps colonel announced his bid, today, for the United States Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator, Barbara Boxer.
Rocky Chavez, 63 was elected to his first term in the California Assembly in 2012, re-elected last year to represent the 76th Assembly District which includes , Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista. Rocky serves as Vice Chair of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee and Higher Education Committee.
The only other declared candidate for the seat is California Attorney General, Kamala Harris, a Democrat. “Our national security is a major concern, with ISIS growing bolder every day,” Rocky said in a news release. “If things get worse overseas, who would Californians want representing them in the Senate? A lawyer from San Francisco, or a Marine colonel who knows how lives can be protected and understands the importance of keeping America and her allies safe and secure?”
Lacking state-wide name recognition, Chavez faces an uphill battle for the office. The last Republican to hold the seat was Thomas Kuchel who was appointed to finish Richard Nixon’s term in 1953. Democrats have held the seat since 1968.
