Water Rescue After Large Wave Topples 37′ Boat at Oceanside Harbor Entrance

Warm Temperatures, Large Crowds and Large Swell Keeping Rescuers Busy

Oceanside CA— At 12:22 pm on March 29th, a 37 foot cabin cruiser was entering the mouth of the Oceanside Harbor when it was hit by a large wave. The boat turned to the side, barrel rolled completely over, and then righted itself. Two of the seven people on board were ejected into the water. Oceanside Lifeguard and OPD Harbor units were on scene in one minute and were able to pull the victims out of the water quickly.
All seven of the victim’s on the boat were transported to the harbor dock to be evaluated by OFD paramedics. None of the victims were transported to the hospital.
15 rescue personnel were on scene staffing the following vessels or vehicles: Three OPD Harbor boats, one Oceanside Lifeguard rescue boat and one personal water craft, one Oceanside Fire Department engine, one ambulance, and one Battalion Chief.
The Oceanside Lifeguard’s have had at least a 12 other water rescues today. Those rescues include swimmers, surfers, and water craft. The Oceanside Lifeguards will be working extended hours today due to the large south swell and amount of people in and on the water.
