Encinitas CA— This morning, March 1, 2015 at approximately 6:50am, a 29 year-old male from San Diego Was driving his 2002 Honda Civic northbound on 1-5 just south of Birmingham Drive.
According to his 29-year-old female passenger, also from San Diego, they were in the #1 lane traveling at approximately 70 mph when they started to hydroplane and the driver lost control.
They hit the center divide and the car overturned. The passenger was able to crawl out of the vehicle prior to being transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The driver remained trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead on scene.
Alcohol or drugs are not a suspected factor in this fatal collision. The accident remains under investigation.
Safety Tip from the CHP: Check to see that the windshield wipers are in good condition. Also be sure the vehicles headlights are on anytime you have your windshield wipers on continuously, it is the law. Reduce your speed and allow more time for your journey. The maximum posted speed limit may not apply to the wet or icy road conditions.
