Del Mar CA— Early this morning, March 12, 2015, at approximately 5:41 am, Sheriff’s Rail Enforcement deputies responded to a collision between a train and a pedestrian, on the railroad tracks, at mile post marker 244.1, near the intersection of 15th Street and Coast Boulevard in Del Mar.
An unidentified woman was struck by a southbound COASTER passenger train after the train operator sounded the horn to warn the woman and she didn’t move off the tracks. The operator activated the emergency braking system, but was unable to stop the train before striking the woman who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
This is the second fatality, in the last seven days, involving a female pedestrian and the COASTER. The incident affected rail service for morning commuters and had a ripple effect for Amtrak Service causing delays of an hour or more for the Surfliner.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Railroad Enforcement Unit is conducting the investigation.
Anyone with information about this case can call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
