Carlsbad CA— Beginning Friday, April 17 2015, between the hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department will be working with other north county law enforcement agencies on a special enforcement that aims to reduce the occurrences of driving while under the influence. The effort is part of the ‘Avoid the 8 on 78‘ campaign,
The ‘Avoid the 8 on 78’ Task Force is spending 2015 focusing on enhanced DUI enforcement and education to include additional roving patrols and checkpoints. The mission of the task force is to reduce drunken and impaired driving along the state Route 78 corridor, from Oceanside and Carlsbad to Escondido.
The task force includes the Carlsbad Police Department, Oceanside Police Department, San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Escondido Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Palomar College Police Department and CSUSM Police Department.
On April 17, the participating agencies will be throughout Carlsbad looking for impaired drivers and reminding all drivers of the importance of not driving while under the influence. According to the California Highway Patrol, from 2010 to 2013, 207 impaired drivers caused collisions resulting in injuries on Interstate 78.
“This is an important issue that impacts everyone who shares the road,” said Lieutenant Mickey Williams. “”By working together and eliminating dangers like driving under the influence and distracted driving, we can all arrive home safely.”
