In Carlsbad, on Saturday, it was the annual Wild West Fest at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. There was country and bluegrass music, western themed crafts, pony rides and an old west show put on by the Alpine Outlaws. The Alpine Outlaws put on shows and teach gun safety while dedicating their time to having fun and re-creating the lure of the Old West. The shows help the Outlaws raise money to help terminally ill children make their final wishes come true.
A salsa contest was part of the event with salsa being judged on taste as well as table presentation in the following categories: best overall, people’s choice, best presentation, funniest presentation, best fruit salsa, hottest salsa and originality. Sandy Andersen has won the contest the previous three years. “It’s my grandma’s recipe.” explained Sandy about her success in the contest. Her grandparents, Refugio and Juanita Rochin, owned Acapulco Gardens restaurant on Hill St (now Coast Highway) in Oceanside. Leo Carrillo was a family friend and frequent visitor at the Gardens.
