Oceanside CA— The largest women’s surfing event in the world, Supergirl Pro, begins today 8:00am at the Oceanside Pier. The free to attend, three-day event features some of the world’s top women surfers including Alana Blanchard, Malia Manuel and Lakey Peterson. The event is a World Surf League (WSL) 6-Star event so it offers valuable points for surfers to qualify into the Women’s Championship Tour in 2016. The competition will stream live on OsideNews, July 25th and 26th.
Along with the surf competition is the Festival Village located in and around the Junior Seau Amphitheater. The Village includes athlete autograph signings, live music, speed painting, clothing, skateboarding, yoga, Zumba, fashion, free hair styling, fitness classes, dance, sustainability, food trucks, Kona beer garden, film festival, celebrities, plus over 50 vendors.
The featured artist in the Village, on Saturday, is Cody Lovaas, a 16 year-old singer-songwriter, surfer from Carlsbad. Cody was named 2014’s Best New Artist by the San Diego Music Awards, the youngest to ever receive the honor. His soulful lyrics and acoustic sounds have been making waves in California and beyond. Besides creating music, Lovaas is passionate about creating positive change in the world around him. He was also recently named SurfAid’s youngest ambassador and a Natural High ambassador, along side Jack Johnson, Kelly Slater and Rob Machado.
On Sunday, it’s Kari Kimmel. Kari’s story is one of extreme hard work and intense passion. Originally from South Florida, Kari Kimmel moved to Los Angeles to pursue her love of music. Since then, she has done everything from writing, recording and co-producing her own music to placing her songs in over 300 film and TV shows and has also been named one of the top 50 artists on VH1.com. In the coming months, you can hear Kari’s song “Nothing Left to Lose” in the movie The Duff, as well as a few original songs in Space Dogs 2. Kari can also be heard singing in the upcoming film Pitch Perfect 2, and has a song featured in the upcoming Jake Gyllenhaal movie Southpaw, releasing later this summer.
