Oceanside CA— At 8:30 this evening, September 14, 2015, units from the Oceanside Police and Fire Department were alerted to a roll-over accident on Highway 76 in the vicinity of Douglas Drive. Police and fire units arrived in the area four minutes later, but were unable to locate any accident.
All of the responding units were assigned areas to search along Highway 76 and along Mission Avenue in case the vehicle had left the roadway. After searching for approximately six minutes, officers and firefighters spotted an SUV approximately 30 feet over the side of the roadway on the eastbound side of the 76, just east of the El Camino Real overpass.

Firefighters went over the side and investigated, finding a male in his 50’s (solo driver) trapped in the vehicle with moderate injuries. Because the vehicle was on a slope, firefighters had to stabilize it with shoring before they were able to access the patient. Additionally, in order to provide a safe corridor to both get rescuers to the patient and to bring him safely back up, crews had to cut and remove the heavy brush from the steep embankment.
After the patient was extricated from the vehicle, he was placed in a basket stretcher and attached to a lifeline hooked to the Ladder truck parked on Highway 76. Firefighters and police officers used a rope and pulley system to pull the victim and attached rescuers back to the roadway.

An Oceanside Fire Department paramedic ambulance transported the driver to Oceanside Airport where a REACH air ambulance took him the rest of the way to Scripps La Jolla hospital.
The total time from fire department arrival to the victim being brought back up to the roadway was 21 minutes. Two engines, one ladder truck, a squad, an ambulance and a Battalion Chief responded, bringing a total of 14 firefighters to the scene.
