Oceanside CA— The MiraCosta Community College District Police Department today referred a criminal investigation to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review. The investigation involves a misappropriation of approximately $7,000 in cash by a former employee of the Horticulture Department.
The college became aware of the cash discrepancies in July, and immediately began an administrative investigation. The college is also taking steps to obtain reimbursement of the funds.
Annual audits have not suggested any cash handling vulnerabilities and the college has regularly been granted the highest level of audit results, which is an “unmodified opinion with no material weaknesses noted.” Regardless, the college has contracted an independent audit firm to conduct a full review of cash-handling procedures in all areas of the college.
