Oceanside CA— Three people suffered serious injuries this evening, November 17, 2015, in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Ranch del Oro and SR-76. The Oceanside Fire and Police Departments responded shortly before 7:00pm and when they arrived, found an overturned Toyota Camry that came to rest in the center divide of SR-76. Three people were trapped in the upside down vehicle suffering severe injuries.
The vehicle was struck by another passenger vehicle who ran through a red light heading west on SR Hwy 76.
“We used rescue struts to stabilize the vehicle and the “Jaws of Life” to remove the patients.” said Oceanside Fire Department Battalion Greg DeAvila.
Two of the victims were transported by air ambulance to Scripps, La Jolla. “A third was transported by ground ambulance because it would have taken too long to get a third helicopter here from El Cajon.” continued the Chief “The patients had head, neck and chest injuries along with injuries to the lower extremities.”
The Chief said he didn’t know the extent of the injuries of each patient. “We were taking the precautions made necessary by the extent of their injuries, the mechanism of the crash and the extent of the damage to the vehicle. We felt they needed to be evaluated at the trauma center.”
The driver of the second car was uninjured.
Westbound SR-76 was briefly shut down between Rancho del Oro and Douglas Drive with traffic being diverted north on RDO to Mission.
Two engine companies, a truck company, three ambulances, a squad and the Battalion Chief responded to the incident. The condition of the victims is unknown at this time.
