Oceanside CA— Civil rights activist Dr. Alveda C. King, founder of Alveda King Ministries, will join New Song Community Church, 3985 Mission Ave in Oceanside, as a special guest on Saturday, January 23 through Sunday, January 24, 2016 as part of the church’s “Freedom Weekend” celebration. All events are open and welcome to the public.
“We are honored and thrilled to have Dr. King join us for Freedom Weekend where we are kicking off the new year in thanks and celebration of our spiritual freedom and of racial equality,” said Pastor Hal Seed, founding pastor of New Song Community Church. “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a national hero and I believe this is an opportunity to bless our city with the chance to hear from his niece. I’m hopeful this event will bring our community-at-large closer together,” he added.
King’s appearance will be a live Q & A session with Seed at each of the weekend’s services. She will speak mainly on her new book, “King Rules”, a deeply personal collection of hard-learned lessons, timeless truths, and principles from her father, uncles and grandfather. She hopes “King Rules” will help readers make better choices about their own family values and how to live them out in the world, while encouraging and challenging readers to live more intentionally and wisely. A book signing will take place after each service.
Freedom Weekend is an all new family-friendly affair at New Song Community Church located 3985 Mission Avenue in Oceanside, featuring activities for children such as bounce houses, face painting, games and food. The outdoor festivities will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 followed by the 7 p.m. service with King. On Sunday, January 24, the games kick off again and take place throughout the day as King joins New Song’s services at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:15 a.m.
King is the daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A. D. King, younger brother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For more than half a century, she experienced first-hand one of the most pivotal and triumphant periods in American history and has continued the King legacy ever since. Currently, King serves as director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, a pro-life advocacy organization based in Staten Island, N.Y., and is also a contributing correspondent with Fox News, speaking on social and cultural commentary. She also served in the Georgia State House of Representatives, and is an accomplished actress and songwriter.
