Carlsbad CA—On January 6, the City of Carlsbad Police Department arrested 43-year-old Louie Patrick Duran, Jr. of Carlsbad for 664/215(a) PC Attempt Carjack, 245 (a)(1) PC Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 273a PC Child Endangerment and 12022.1 PC Commit Felony While on Bail.
The attempted carjacking occurred on December 29, 2015 and was reported to the Police Department at 6:32 p.m. Since December 29, the Police Department has been actively investigating the incident in an effort to bring the event to today’s conclusions.
On December 29, the Police Department received a call from a resident in the 1300 block of Laurel Tree Lane (located between Aviara Parkway and Private Road) that wanted to report an attempted auto theft.
It was reported that the female victim had placed her child in her car and entered her vehicle as well. The suspect, wearing a motorcycle helmet, approached the car and stuck a Machete type knife into the doorway of the vehicle to prevent the vehicle door from closing. The suspect then asked for the vehicle keys. The victim screamed and grabbed at the Machete causing the suspect to leave on foot in an eastbound direction.
The victim sustained cuts on both hands from the Machete. The victim sought medical attention on her own.
Officers arriving on scene asked for the assistance of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, ASTREA, while they created a perimeter around the crime scene. Officers also used a K9 to assist with the search into the brush areas.
At 7:35 p.m., officer canceled the search of the area but continued the investigation to locate the suspect. The investigation led detectives to the suspect’s residence in the 1300 block of Laurel Tree Lane.
After a search of the residence yielded the machete and helmet thought to be worn during the incident, Duran was taken into custody.
Duran will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility. Duran is currently on probation.
