San Onofre CA— This evening, February 26,2016 at approximately 8:05 pm a 22-year-old male Marine from Camp Pendleton (home address is Kayenta AZ) was driving his 2006 Chevy Silverado truck northbound on I-5 in the #5 lane south of the San Onofre Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, also know as the Truck Scales, at an unknown speed.
For reasons still under investigation the driver of the Silverado failed to notice that a 2000 International Big Rig, driven by a 57-year-old male from Commerce, was slowing to enter the enforcement facility. He collided into the rear of the big rig and became trapped underneath.
The 22-year-old male from Camp Pendleton was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the big rig did not suffer any injuries.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision. It remains under investigation.
The 2 right lanes of northbound I-5 remain closed as of 10:30pm for the investigation.
